Today marks not only the first day of Black History Month, but the 100th year anniversary since it was founded by historian Carter G Woodson. Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the academic, cultural, and societal contributions Black communities have made to the U.S. and the world. 

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, observed on the third Monday in January, honors the life and legacy of the iconic civil rights leader who championed racial equality through nonviolent protest, culminating in landmark legislation like the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965. It's a national day for service, encouraging Americans to volunteer and reflect on Dr. King's vision of justice, compassion, and community, remembering his powerful "I Have a Dream" speech and tireless work for a more inclusive America.
